Methodology of Traditional Dance I: Figure Dances and Song Dances

The course takes as starting point the traditional Norwegian repertoire of the group dances of figure dances and song dances for the study of traditional dance technique and practical instruction. The course is partly a practical introduction to dance technique, and partly instructional training. Students must develop a written and substantiated plan for teaching selected dances and direct parts of the planned instruction. The course will have joint lectures with DANS1008-1010 on an introduction into methods and problems related to the teaching of traditional Norwegian dance for children, youths and adults.
Two out of the four courses DANS1007-1010 are compulsory part of bachelor's programme in Dance Studies. The two other courses can be chosen as optional topics for the bachelor's programme.

Knowledges:An examinee with a completed qualification in DANS1007

• has knowledge of didactical problems associated with training in traditional Norwegian group dances in general and training in figure dances and song dances specially
• has knowledge of techniques of directing and of the repertoire of figure dances and song dances

Skills:An examinee with a completed qualification in DANS1007

• can analyze and perform dance technique of figure dances and song dances
• can use instruction techniques and plan directing of figure dances and song dances

General competence:An examinee with a completed qualification in DANS1007

• can act independent in the role of direction
• can work independently with questions of didactics

Lectures, practical exercises, tutoring, and written assignment.
Assessment: The students will be assessed with a letter grade based on the presentation of a written assignment and a practical test. The presentation counts for 2/3 and the practical test 1/3. Failure of one part of the assessment (presentation or practical test), requires retaking that particular part.
