The use of digital tools for proportioning and the environmental impacts are also emphasized in this course.

The course can be given as a guided self-study if less than 6 students are registered.

Learning outcomes

The course provides basic knowledge of important material properties. After completion the student should be able to:

Knowledge:

- The candidate will learn the basic theory about materials' composition, preparation, structure, properties, function, and applications.

- Explain important fresh- and hardened state properties.

- Explain degradation and lifetime for different material compositions, and how these are affected by external influences such as climate and chemicals.

- Justify the choice of material compositions for various purposes.

Skills:

- Show the relationship between the choice of material composition, physical material properties, and environmental concerns.

- Perform basic laboratory exercises on fresh and hardened concrete

General competence:

- After completing the course, the student should have learned the relevant subject terminology.

- After completing the course, the student should be able to proportion concrete based on the strength and durability demands.

- The course contributes to the study program's D-string, i.e. digitization / digital competence by offering training and the use of relevant calculation methods in connection with compulsory assignments.

-The course also contributes to the ethics string in the study program: ethics in connection with the concrete's environmental impacts are emphasized.

Teaching methods

This course is for students on the campus in Gjøvik. Students will carry on individual preparation before the teaching activity in the classroom which will be based on student active learning.
