About this course

Content

The contents of the course include patterns of consumption and waste trends/composition of waste. The focus will be on private waste generation, and waste from enterprises, including collection, treatment and disposal of wastes and hazardous waste. Issues like waste reduction, source separation methods and recirculation, biological, chemical and thermal waste treatment methods will be included. Special attention will be paid to treatment of organic wastes: composting, aeration and anaerobic treatment. Recycling technologies will be focused. Environmental issues and bio-/circle economy of waste handling systems will also be included in the course.

Learning outcomes

The course will give the students advanced knowledge of the topics. The student should have an overview of and be able to analyze and evaluate the various technologies that are discussed in the topics in light of the goals society has for including waste management into the circular economy. Within the theme of treatment of organic waste, the student should also be able to calculate and dimension facilities. The student should be able to evaluate different treatment methods with regard to environmental impact. Circuit economy (circular economy) is a key element of the topic.
