  • Microbial and chemical contamination sources and pathways
  • Norwegian and international regulations pertaining to water and wastewater systems
  • Water quality and related parameters of significance
  • Mechanical, biological and chemical treatment processes for water and wastewater
  • Selection of appropriate treatment process and combination
  • Decentralized wastewater treatment (infiltration systems, constructed wetland etc)
  • Modelling and simulation of water and wastewater treatment processes.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

  • Understands national and international challenges in water and wastewater management.
  • Knowledge of various microbial and chemical contaminants.
  • Knowledge of how drinking water and wastewater should be treated.
  • Good knowledge of local, national and international laws, regulations and guidelines that underpin the choice of various water and sewerage treatment processes.
  • Understands basic important principles, concepts and theories for the design of water and wastewater treatment processes.
  • Gain knowledge of innovative water and wastewater management systems
  • Knowledge of the resource value of wastewater/sludge, and treatment technologies to recycle these resources for the benefit of society.

Skills

  • Be able to use softwares and tools to assess the health and environmental consequences of water and sewerage systems (GEMSS/HQWSS).
  • Be able to carry out independent field and laboratory work in the planning and design of conventional and decentralized water and wastewater treatment plants.
  • Be able to apply key theories and principles for the design and selection of appropriate technology in water and wastewater treatment.
  • Be able to use digital software and tools to design, simulate and optimize various water and wastewater treatment processes (e.g. BioWin and WATPRO).
  • Be able to write and communicate technical reports well and efficiently.

Competence

  • Be able to select, plan and design an appropriate water and wastewater treatment plant for a given locality and budget in accordance with given regulations, guidelines and cost limits.
  • Be able to work in multidisciplinary teams in water and sewerage management.
  • Be able to contribute to the development of good practice for water and wastewater treatment through participation in dialogues in the field.

Teaching methods

This course has several components that include lectures, individual & group assignments, fieldwork, laboratory exercises and excursions. The laboratory work relates to water quality analysis and experiments on treatment processes (coagulation & flocculation, filtration, disinfection). Exercises involving the use of digital modelling and simulation tools to understand specific unit processes. Parts of the course will be taught in English, and all mandatory assignments have to be submitted within the deadlines to be admitted to the exams.
