About this course

Content

Structural design principles for reinforced concrete, steel and timber structures. Introduction to Eurocodes for steel, concrete and timber design.

Concrete:

Introduction to concrete as construction material.

Classification and mechanical properties.

Ultimate limit-state capacity calculations of reinforced concrete beams, columns and slabs subjected to axial force, bending moment and shear force.

Steel:

Introduction to steel as construction material.

Classification and mechanical properties.

Calculation of cross-section capacity.

Elastic and plastic capacity of cross-sections under axial, shear and bending, and combinations of these.

Buckling of members subjected to axial force.

Capacity of bolted steel connections.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:

The candidate:

  • Understands mechanical properties for concrete and steel
  • Understands basic theories for strength analysis, load calculation and design according to the European standard NS-EN
  • Understands basic design principles and statics

Skills:

The candidate can:

  • design simple structural elements and make drawings by hand and relevant 2D/3D softwares.
  • evaluate the ultimate-limit state capacity of structural element in existing buildings.

General competence:

The candidate:

  • has competence to evaluate the consequence of a chosen design in ultimate limit state design.

Digital competence: Qualified use of computer programs. Analysis, interpretation of results. Data editing

Sustainability competence: The course helps to provide students with the necessary foundation to design safe, economical and sustainable structures.
