About this course

Content

The course will not be held spring 2027. If too few students sign up for the course, it might be cancelled. A limited number of methods are selected each year depending on needs and qualifications of the students. Examples: -Analysis of molecular weight, size and shape of biopolymers in solution using static and multi-angle light scattering, X-ray scattering and neutron scattering -Dynamic light scattering -Determination of the molecular weight distribution (polydisperse systems) using size-exclusion chromatography combined with light scattering and viscosity detectors. -Intrinsic viscosity determination. Viscosity of biopolymer solutions. -Chiropical methods (Optical rotation, circular dichroism) -Analysis of the carbohydrate composition (primary structure) in complex carbohydrates. -Analysis of complex oligomer mixtures by HPLC og mass spectrometriy (MS) -Chromatographic separation and purification of proteins. -Studies of conformational properties and conformational transitions. -Rheological studies of biopolymer gels and solutions. -Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). -Literature studies. -Other methods may be included if needed or as a consequence of the scientific development in the field.

Learning outcomes

Scope: Practical introduction to, and in-depth studies experimental methods for characterizing biopolymers.

Teaching methods

Teaching consists of regular lectures and group work/colloquia. Relevant international courses and conferences may be included in the course. The course is given as concentrated teaching and laboratory work. Students are only permitted to take the course after approval by the Department, and it might be cancelled if not enough students register. The course will be given in English if necessary.
