Introduction to biotechnology

This course provides an introduction to biotechnology with focus on applications of biotechnology in important areas relating to industry, medicine and research. Emphasis on topics such as metabolism and energy conversion, enzyme catalysis, information flow from DNA to RNA to proteins, and recombinant DNA and CRISPR technology.

After completing this course, you:

• recognize the function of biomolecules
• know about biotechnological processes applied in industrial and research contexts
• can explain how biological processes and molecules render biotechnology possible
• can execute simple laboratory experiments that demonstrate principles of microbiology, genetics, biochemistry and bioinformatics
• have experience in applying knowledge to solve scientific or practical tasks
• can assess biotechnological solutions in light of ethical problems at hand and UN's Sustainable Development Goals
• have experience in identifying, retrieving and interpreting information from scientific sources independently
• can discuss and convey biotechnological topics in your own words

Lectures, laboratory work and excursions. All activities are compulsory.
