Individual social work and social groupwork

The students will acquire knowledge of methods for individual social work and social group work. Through learning about, and practising, we pay particular attention to applied social work skills. The aim is to prepare students for managing the complexity in interaction and communication in a range of different contexts.

Knowledge - the student

• has extensive knowledge about social work methods with individuales and groups
• has extensive knowledge about communication, relations, interaction and supervisjon
• has knowledge about social workers as professionals
• has knowledge about the complexity in social work interaction in with service users and other professionals in a range of contexts

Skills - the student

• is able to apply knowledge based on reserach, practice experience and user experience in professional social work
• is able to apply social work methods with individuals and groups in different contexts
• is able to combine social work methods to promote social change for individuals and groups
• is able to critically reflect over implications of choosing approaches of intervention
• is able to critically reflect and demonstrate courage, creativity and perseverance to promote ethical practise
• is able to reflect over his or her professional performance and adjust it under supervision
• can reflect on and apply knowledge to promote equal welfare services - can document and disseminate prefessional knowledge
• is able to apply professional knowledge to identify resources and give hope when workning with people in vulnerable situations
• can reflect on and find ways to handle conflicts and reduce risks

General competence - the student

• is able to integrate theoretical knowledge with professional skills
• has competence in using professional skills in challenging situations
• is able to reflect on ethical dimensions in social work - appreciate the value base and ethical principles in social work
• is able to professionally interact with service users, colleges and other professionals
• has increasing courage and confidence in his or her professional competence - masters written and oral/spoken professional communication
• can acknowledge the impact of digital communication in professional practice and interaction

The course will be given by a combination of lectures, student group work, skills training and independent study. Part of the lectures may be given in English.
