Art and Common Space

Art and Common Space takes as its starting- point the necessity to re-imagine public space/place in relation to artistic, architectural and other creative practices. The course is partly theory-based, always mindful of practical situations and real-life scenarios.. The course will increase and guide the students' awareness of the possibilities and challenges of presenting/placing art both in nature and in urban situations. The course will cover historical theories of public space that have had particular relevance for art and architecture, as well as current and innovative theoretical practices that have arisen out of today's challenges. The practice-based work concentrate on a continuous redefining of the parameters of both conceptual and material realities and demands of art's role in people's lives. The term «common" refers to the variety of spatial and social situations where people are meeting and communicating.

Students can analyse and reflect critically on various issues relevant for adressing the overlapping challenges of space, time and communication within common/public space. The student has acquired a working knowledge of the history of public space in relation to art and architecture, and how to relate and articulate it to the urgent issues in contemporary society. The student will have the ability to initiate and carry out collaborations within the subject area.

The course will consist of workshops, lectures, practical and creative interventions into public space, individual tutorial, and joint artistic and/or architectural projects. The lectures will focus on contemporary philosophy relevant sociological issues as well as the ongoing discourses on the role of art and architecture in today's society. Specific conditions

Approved compulsory assignments are valid in the current semester.

The course will not be offered if too few students register for the teaching.

This course is offered to international master’s students. Language of instruction is English.
