Exhibition project

Following up the informed basis established in the obligatory course 'Utstillingsproduksjon', the course 'Utstillingsprosjekt' take on the challenge of further developing the learning outcomes of 'Utstillingsproduksjon'.

Exhibitions are the central function of museums and art galleries and the dominant format to showcase artworks by individuals or groups of artists, particular genres, thematic areas, or collections. This course further develops the process of exhibition making within the context of an educational institution and beyond. During the term involved students will examine contemporary exhibitions under curatorial, technological and architectural aspects. The course advances the established knowledge of exhibition-making as both a collaborative and individual practice, not only from an artist perspective, but through engagement with processes that involve all parties relevant to specific presentations. Spatial decision making, handling and placement of objects, and public program development will be developed in a practical learning environment and in individual assignments. As the core requirement, exhibitions developed within this course will be open to the public in the in-house venue. Students must participate in curating an exhibition

• Students can understand and engage with a space, making use of existing elements in order to make exhibition content coherent and accessible on an independent basis.
• Students are familiar with exhibition project administration and master writing for exhibition announcements and preparing materials for press usage.
• The students know how exhibitions are installed today and how they were installed within our recent history, and why.
• Students can reflect on and refer to and what these forms imply on both an aesthetic, poetic, formal and political level.
• The students can identify and organise exhibitions in relation to the institutional, non-institutional and political context of exhibtions and exhibiting modes have appeared through history.

The course will have a hands on approach and develop students knowledge of the procedures and challenges of exhibition making through active participation in the current activities in Gallery KIT and by a collaborative project with individual responsibility, to install an exhibition on a agreed upon self-initiated subject or material.

Based on the mutual interests of the students this class will develop one or several visual concepts and forms for presenting the ideas the student group(s) develop. The vision for this class is finding forms for contents yet unseen within disciplines we don’t know, in other words to explore the limits of our knowledge, be it in ourselves, in the class or in the field, to become familiar with innovative thinking and innovation processes. To contextualise this endeavor our class looks for partners to work with.
