Printmaking Expanded Field 2

Graphics Now 2 is a continuation of the course Graphics Now 1 with an emphasis of practical and technical experimentation through individual assignements. It will continue to build and broaden the practical and theoretical knowledge about printmaking, the traditions of artists books and the current state of how publications, fliers, manifestos, books, Twitter, facebook, instagram, and other public spaces are used to spread information, desinformation and propaganda by artist’s, politicians and others. The class will continue to discuss and reflect about the immanent possibilities these mediums have in our society now, and about how to use these.

In practice we are investigating how traditional methods such as silk screen printing, lithography, etching and engraving are relevant to our post-internet realities, and can be used as a tools for looking at our society today.

The invention of the camera, the telephone and the steam machine fundamentally changed painting and created Impressionism. Our “Graphics Now” course investigates how we can use traditional printmaking media for new purposes in the light of new technical inventions.

By the completion of this course the student has broad knowledge of analogue and digital printing techniques. The student can analyse the potential and limits of electronic publishing formats and experiment with new dissemination channels for his or her own artistic production. The student can expand the knowledge of analogue printing techniques and identify and use digital book formats and publishing platforms. The students can produce one (electronic) artist book, understanding the ethical requirements and principles. The student can experiment with forms of display and presenting artist book

The course will build on the introduction to practical and theoretical aspects of graphic media and artistic production laid out in Graphics Now 1. Through workshops, seminars, lectures and tutorials it will broaden the students basic knowledge of printmaking and provide the historical, theoretical and technical framework in which individual artistic projects can be developed. The goal is that each student produce one (electronic) artist book and present it at the end of the course.
