Advanced Environmental Toxicology

The course is offered every second year in the autumn semester, next time in autumn 2026.

The course provides a deeper understanding of key concepts and topics currently discussed in environmental toxicology. The course is based on reading, analyzing and discussing recent and classic primary literature in toxicology. It comprises a series of 10 sessions of 3 hours, each session corresponding to a specific topic selected by the teachers, including

• Exposure science,
• Toxicokinetics,
• Toxicodynamics,
• Modeling and assessing the impacts of toxicants
• Toxicology in a societal context

The course can be cancelled if less than 4 participants take part.

Students gain advanced knowledge of concepts and topics in environmental toxicology, in particular regarding current challenges at the boundaries of the discipline.

Knowledge:

• advanced understanding of the theoretical principles of toxicology
• advanced understanding of the applied aspects of toxicology
• advanced understanding on current challenges in toxicology

Skills

• present orally in the form of a lecture concepts and challenges in environmental toxicology
• critically reflect and discuss scientific publications

General competence

• search, read and understand the relevant literature
• present and discuss own analyses
• participate in debates within the field of national and international forums
• identify new relevant issues and contribute to the development of new ideas, theories, methods, interpretations and documentation

Seminar: 30 hours

Presentation of two lectures of 45 min on an assigned topic with visual support - similar to trial lecture at the PhD defense. The presentations are followed by a two hours discussion on the presented topic.
