About this course

Content

The course gives an introduction to the theoretical basis, goals and principles of a scientifically based and sustainable stock management. Particular genetic issues connected with numerically small populations, reinforcement activities and introgression from domesticated stocks are specifically treated. The range of methods and utilities available in management for achieving the general goals are treated. Main emphasis is placed on management of marine resources and the accompanying negotiation processes and practical implementation of the regulations. The biological basis for the management, the knowledge need and a set of accompanying practical regulation methods are exemplified by the management history of the two largest Norwegian marine fish resources; cod and herring. One-day cruises for trawling with research vessel and, when appropriate, visit to a fish production plant, are included in the course plan.
