Practices in Environmental Toxicology

This laboratory course includes an introduction to methods for studying exposure and effects of environmentally disturbing chemical compounds. Attendance of the intensive lab course (planned after the Easter holidays) is obligatory. The student must write 2-3 independent lab reports (all need to be approved) and perform an independent writing project (on a chosen topic within environmental toxicology) and an oral presentation of the project. The final lab report (40%), written project (50%) and oral presentation (10%) all count towards the end score.

Knowledge:

The course gives an introduction to scientific practices that are used when studying exposure and effects of environmental pollutants on biological systems (from molecular to ecosystem level).

Skills:

The course will provide experience in easy to use methods to detect environmental pollutants and their effects in biological systems, simple statistical methods and evaluation of obtained results, and written and oral presentation.

General competence:

The candidate has competence in handling of chemicals, including knowledge of health and safety in the lab, understands common methods used in environmental toxicology and related environmental problems.
