Biological Systematics and Nomenclature

The course gives an introduction to biosystematics and covers classification and naming of plants and animals, and reconstruction of phylogenetic relationships. We give an overview of molecular methods in systematics and their applications compared to morphology. Natural history collections at the museum: content, organisation and use are presented. Practical demonstrations and a project are integrated in the course.

On completion of the course the students should be familiar with the classification and naming of plants and animals. Students should also be able to show insight into reconstruction of phylogenetic relationships with the use of morphological and molecular characters.
