About this course

Content

The starting point of the course is the theory base for air and moisture transfer in porous materials, air voids and at surfaces. Transfer phenomena in building assemblies and practical cases are treated. Driving forces, boundary conditions, different interacting mechanisms in different types of assemblies, moisture accumulation and drying, multidimensional conditions and relevant material parameters are also included, as well as methods for numerical simulation and application of relevant software.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the candidate should have an in-depth understanding of driving forces, transport mechanisms and practical consequences of moisture and air transport in building assemblies. The candidate shall also be able to analyse and solve problems linked to causality and performance problems caused by such transport processes.

Knowledge: The candidate should have elaborative knowledge of processes related to building physics and will be capable of systematic application of relevant methods and tools for simulation, analysis and evaluation of such processes in design as well as refurbishment of buildings.

Skills: The candidate is able independently to perform analysis of building assemblies as a basis for assessment of risk for performance problems. The candidate is also able to identify, develop and quality assure relevant solutions for such problems.

General competence: After completing the course the candidate has obtained:
- Ability to analyse critically the design and material use in building assemblies
- Ability to orientate oneself regarding the relevant research front
- Ability to identify building physical problems and communicate relevant solutions
- Ability to ensure sustainability aspects

Teaching methods

Combination of seminars and self study. An individual study report (e.g. literature survey, experimental or numerical study or similar) is mandatory. To pass the course a score of at least 70 percent is required.
The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course.
