Investigating Communication and Communication Problems

Starting point: Some students will wonder whether verbal communication is an appropriate field of concentration for them. Content: The course will show how a current communications phenomenona can be understood and analyzed. The course will give an introduction to theory of verbal communication, with an emphasis on practical analysis and discussion.

The course will provide basic insight into verbal communication, and will build students' ability to analyze communication on an introductory level.

Lectures, seminars and exercises in a multi-media laboratory.
More on assessment: Obligatory activities must be approved before the final grade is determined. Students will work with a specific communication situation which will be analyzed and discussed. The assessment portfolio will be composed of the three written works and the project report itself. The project description should be 1-4 pages, the corpus description 1-3 pages, the analysis draft 4-8 pages and the project report 10-15 pages, typed on A4 paper (line spacing 1.5). Each contribution to the portfolio will be assessed individually, but the grade will be set based on a total evaluation which will consider progress through the course. The whole portfolio has to be redone if the student fails.
