Methods of Field Archaeology III

ARK 3320 "Methods of Field Archaeology III" will cover two semesters.

The theoretical part of the course will be comprised of lectures and workshops aimed at the academic and practical execution of the field work. The teaching emphasises understanding of landscape and material cultures in other countries as well as Norway. In addition to training in field manangement and archaeological survey, the course covers practical training in the use of museum archives and stockrooms in managerial and research matters.

According to the course curriculum, a candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome (defined as knowledge and skills):

Knowledge:
The candidate has attained
- broad knowledge of various forms of archaeological field operations with corresponding theoretical paradigms, practical planning, survey forms and methods of documentation
- super-regional knowledge of the common forms of archeological cultural remains, artefacts and features

Skills:
The candidate has acquired
- practical and theoretical skills for basic archaeological field management, with corresponding skills in formulating research questions and choosing methods, organization in relation to the priorities of cultural heritage management, regulations and routines, dissemination in the field, infrastructure, equipment and staff, conservation and documentation in the field, handling and cataloguing of collected artifacts as well as scientific tests
- practical experience with the inclusion of archaeological field observations, artifacts, scientific tests and documentation materials in archives and museum stores
- practical experience with analyzing a broad specter of cultural remains and features in various landscapes through excursions

In order to be able to sit the exam, the student is required to attend a minimum of 75 percent of the theoretical lectures and a minimum of 75 percent of the field assignments. An excavation report or registration report from the field management course must be submitted as an "approved report".

The exam consist of an excavation report and a written exam (6 hours).
In the event the student fails one of the assessment elements, the element will have to be repeated before a final grade for the course can be assigned.
