Museology at the University Museums

The course will provide insight into the archaeological museum's role in society from the initial phase to the present. The emphasis is on museological theory relating to university museums' history, materiality and museological expert knowledge and practices related to museums' responsibility for the management, conservation, storage, archiving and dissemination. University Museum's collections are the base for focus on conservation theory and ethics. Although the main emphasis is on the archaeological university museum, also other types of museums and visitor centers are subject for study.

A candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome according to the course curriculum, defined as knowledge and skills:

Knowledge:
The candidate should have thorough knowledge of:
- museums role in the society
- central features in museum development
- museological theory
- organization and activities at the museum
- knowledge of laws and other policies that govern the archaeological university museum

Skills
The candidate shall have:
- knowledge on to the specific activities of the archaeological university museum
- insight into the interaction between the different activities at the university museum
- the ability to analyze the complex interplay between society, knowledge production, the museum as institution for safeguarding and as dissemination institutions
