Historical Archaeology I

The source material from historic time is rich and varied, and the main focus of the course will be on the archaeological material and in which contexts this material appear. At the same time the course will focus on the source material`s connections to written and oral sources. There are two alternative reading lists: 1. General historical archaeology, and 2. Historical archaeology emphasizing maritime archaeology.

According to the course curriculum, a candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome (defined as knowledge and skills):

Knowledge:
The candidate has attained
- deeper knowledge of chosen topics and research themes within historical time, based on archeological and historical sources; alternatively of maritime-archaeological issues.

Skills:
The candidate has acquired skills to
- elucidate research questions related to chosen topics within historical archeology, as well as analyze and discuss how various archaeologists have interpreted the contexts of material cultural traces from a theoretical perspective

Lectures. The exam consist of a written assignment of maximum 3500 words and a written exam of 6 hours. Both parts must be passed in the same term and there will be given one grade only. If one failes, both the assignment and the written exam must be completed again in the same term.
