Ancient Religion and Mythology

This course is an introduction to Greco-Roman religion and mythology, adressed through the study of translated primary sources and put in a perspective by the help of secondary literature.

A candidate who has passed the exam is expected to have the following knowledge and skills:

Knowledge

• Basic knowledge of the classical Greek and Roman religion and mythology, of their role in society and their importance in European political and cultural history.
• Some understanding of language (Greek and Latin) and to know terminology from the field of classical study

Skills

• Can account for the most important religious beliefs in antiquity
• Can account for the most important forms of religious practice in antiquity
• Can account for the most important features of Greek and Roman mythology
• See connections in the European cultural history

Lectures and seminars.

Four mandatory learning activities (group presentations or individual essays).

At the end of the term a 3 day home exame with assignments related to the syllabus is conducted.
