Ancient History

This course is an introduction to Greco-Roman history and civilization.

A candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome according to the course curriculum, defined as knowledge and skills:

Knowledge

• Students should acquire basic knowledge of Greek and Roman history and civilisation, primarily from 800 BC to 476 AD. This includes knowledge of how to use the primary sources of Greek and Roman Antiquity and awareness of problems and challenges related to the use of such sources (texts, monuments, inscriptions etc).

Skills

• Students should acquire the skills of performing historical analyses of the different periods of Antiquity, explaining also the history and methods pertaining to Ancient history as a university subject.
• They should also be able to give an account of the reception of Antiquity, that is the historical continuity of cultural phenomena (art, music, literature, philosophy, political theory etc.).

Lectures and seminars.

Four learning activities (group presentations), where three out of four possible are mandatory.

At the end of the term a six hours written exam with assignment related to the syllabus is conducted.
