Advanced Course in Literature before 1800

The academic content of the course, i.e. topic and theory will vary from one semester to another and offers an advanced course in selected themes within European literature from Antiquity to the Early Romantic period. The course may focus on a specific period, a trend, or a genre (the tragedies of Antiquity, the Gothic horror novel, the literature of Classicism, the picaresque tradition of the novel etc.) The course may also focus on inter-aesthetic connections within a specific period (for example the art, music and literature of the Baroque) or the mutual influence and adaptability between literature and other media.

Candidates will have obtained the following general competency after successfully completing this course:

- specialized knowledge of essential literary works within the genres epic poetry, lyric poetry and drama, as well as general knowledge of the origin, development and poetics within the genres

- an understanding of literature in an extensive aesthetic, historical and cultural context

- the ability to present the academic content of the course critically and independently both orally and in writing

- the ability to formulate a current problem based on a given assignment, as well as write an academic text

Lectures and seminars. Active student participation is expected.

1-3 compulsory assignments: Approved written and/or oral assignment(s) and/or test(s) (determined by lecturer).
