Modernisation and Gender

Through a number of ethnographic studies, the course discusses expressions of modernization in comtemporary Africa. The course critically review adaption to urban life, interdependence between rural and urban communities, tensions and ambivalence between the "modern" and "traditional", the collective and individual, and between generations and the ethnicities. In addition, the course discuss how gender identities and relations are socially and culturally constructed and reconfigured in contemporary African societies, resulting in new forms of kinship, family structures, sexuality and reproduction.

To develop a critical understanding of processes of modernisation – including urbanisation – in contemporary Africa, with a focus on how young men and women adapt to rapid transformations and generate new ways of life.
