Ethnicity and Kinship

The course explores some important aspects of African identities, particularly those connected with ethnicity and kinship. Ethnic identities are closely related both to culture and to political movements (nationalism, democratisation) and are often depicted as the background to bloody conflicts in Africa. Ethnic multiplicity is, however, a universal trait of most African societies, not only those characterised by conflict. The course offers an insight to the role of kinship and ethnicity for individual rights and identity formation in today's Africa.
