Tectonics and Reuse

The course examines methodological approaches to understanding existing building stock at a system level. Students will become familiar with different perspectives from technological, practical, cultural and theoretical standpoints. Particular emphasis will be placed on investigations that illuminate the significance of buildings as material banks in a future circular economy, as well as the practical approaches associated with this. The course seeks collaboration with the ongoing research projects related to existing buildings. Students will receive an introduction to basic scientific method in architectural research.

When choosing the specialization area Topology and Tectonics within AAR4690 Circular Studio - Materials, AAR4904 Tectonics and Reuse is a mandatory knowledge topic.

Knowledge: The candidates should be familiar with different perspectives on existing buildings and discuss their significance for further use of the building. The candidates can explain the various trade-offs related to the further use of existing buildings, such as preservation or demolition, condition and architectural potential. The candidates should be familiar with relevant research within a limited topic within the analysis of existing buildings.

Skills: The candidates should be able to apply methods for systematic registration of buildings so that further use can be assessed at a higher level. The candidates should be able to develop, implement and analyze a registration, as well as discuss their results. The candidates should be able to use other people’s registrations to illuminate choices in their own work.

General Competence: The candidates should be able to demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate sources and account for their own practice and values that they assess based on.

The course uses different forms of learning such as lectures, group work and registrations in the local area. Students will contribute to a common learning environment and participate in the discussion of suitable forms of learning.
