Architecture and the City - Project Course C

The aim of the course is to extend design skills within a rigorous creative studio environment and provide the opportunity to explore architecture as a response to the contemporary city. The course requires students to undertake project(s) in the fields of architecture and/or urbanism at an advanced level.

The course is the main element of a combination with AAR4735 Architecture and the city - Knowledge Course C - which must be taken in the same semester.

The candidate:

• has achieved advanced and new knowledge of specific architectural and / or planning prerequisites for the chosen project assignment and can apply this knowledge in their own architectural work.
• has advanced knowledge of architecture as a field of knowledge; its theory and history as well as its technical, scientific, social and cultural basis, and can apply this knowledge in new ways in their own architectural work.
• possesses and shows a development of their aesthetic and practical understanding (tacit knowledge), and is able to apply this knowledge in their own architectural work.
• has advanced their experiential knowledge of the relationship between architectural representations at different levels of abstraction, and concrete built architecture, cities and towns that are in use over time.
• has advanced knowledge of the different aspects of sustainability and can use these as an active component in their own architectural work.

Skills

The candidate:

• is able to give form to architecture and/or cities, towns or other works of architecture at a high architectural level through artistic and scientific investigations, concept development, and architectural design in relevant scales and formats, and shows progression within this.
• is trained in the use of architectural methods, tools and expressions, and can apply both known and new variations of these in architectural design, urban design and/or other means of production, in a targeted, professional and experimental manner.
• is able to critically assess and recognize quality in architectural works, cities, places, projects and urban plans, and can make use of such assessments in their own architectural work.
• is able to navigate within research and development in the field of architecture and can apply this knowledge in the development and progression of their own architectural work.
• is able to use different aspects of sustainability as a basis for their design and architectural production and is able to evaluate and relate these aspects in a critical manner in light of aesthetic expressions and spatial qualities.

General competence

The candidate

The course requires students to undertake project(s) related to the fields of architecture and urbanism. Students work individually or in small groups. Architectural drawing, modelling, architectural representation and written texts form the main core of the studio. Teaching will be conducted as lectures, seminars, discussions and critics, as well as regular tutoring individually and in groups.

Optional excursions can be arranged as part of the teaching of the course. The teacher will inform students at the start of the semester if there will be an optional excursion. Students who participate in optional excursions must expect to pay a share of the expenses. For students who do not participate in optional excursions, an alternative will be offered.

This course is offered to incoming exchange students and will be taught in English if necessary.
