Architectural Design with Light and Colours

The course will have specific focus on the effects of light and colour in an architectural context; light in interiors and colours in exteriors. The first assignment consists of design and construction of an exhibition in full-scale in the room laboratory. The vertical light in architecture will be studied in the second assignment. The final assignment varies to reflect and respond to contemporary architectural challenges, i.e. infill project or building rehabilitation. Sustainability is addressed through the aesthetics of adaptation to, and preservation of, heritage forms and encouraging sustainable material choices and circularity in resource reuse.

The course aims at giving students: Knowledge of architectural design of architectural rooms with focus on the coherence between function and aesthetics in design, natural/artificial light and colours. Skills in the design method of light distribution in room with the help of scale-models, photography of scale-models and preparation of colour outline. General competance in architectural design.

The course will have varied forms of teaching, including lectures and seminars as well as model studies in the light laboratory and full-scale experiments in the room laboratory. Students will also design an individual architectural project.

The teacher will inform students at the start of the semester if there will be a voluntary excursion. Students who participate in voluntary excursions will be expected to pay an individual sum. Students who choose not to participate in the voluntary excursion will be offered an alternative teaching plan.
