3Houses

The course investigates the process of designing buildings. It challenges the ability to formulate precise architectural ideas and concepts, through using narratives, making sketches, and building clear physical conceptual models. This derives from the belief that if you can formulate your project with a high level of precision, it is much easier to translate this into a strong architectural project.

Students taking this course are required to take the accompanying theory course AAR4609 3Houses Theory Part (7.5sp).

3Houses is based on the premise that the students explore how architecture speak to us, through words, material, form, and culture to improve their own professional intuition. The main goal of the course is that the students reach a higher level of consciousness in working with the architectural design process, through actively be able to identify their intentions concerning form, space, light, sequence, movement as well as contextual presence.

KNOWLEDGE

The candidate;

• Must have in-depth understanding of architecture as a field of complex knowledge, its theory and history, as well as its technical, scientific, social, and cultural basis and can apply this knowledge in their own work.
• Should have a considerable aesthetic and practical understanding and can apply this tacit knowledge in their own work.
• Must have highly developed experiential knowledge of the relationship between architectural representations at different levels of abstraction and built architecture.

SKILLS

The candidate;

• Should be able to form architecture through artistic and scientific investigations, concept development and architectural design in various scales and formats.
• Must have control of architectural methods, tools, and forms of expression, and demonstrate these in an artistic way in their own project in a professional and experimental manner.

GENERAL COMPETENCE

The candidate;

• Should take independent responsibility of their own learning and professional development.
• Should be able to reflect critically on their own architectural work, create new frameworks for understanding and depart from conventions after critical consideration.
• Should manage to communicate their own (and others) architectural work to collegaues as well as to the general public at a professional level.

3Houses is a project-based studio, consisting of three projects throughout the semester. The learning methods consist of lectures, excursions, design studio guidance and the students oral project presentations and discussions with teachers, external professionals, and classmates. The first days of the design process is about formulating the form idea, with a combination of words, drawings and sometimes even a conceptual model. Then begins the process of developing the idea into an architectural project with guidance from the teacher team.

The teacher will inform students at the start of the semester if there will be a voluntary excursion. Students who participate in voluntary excursions will be expected to pay an individual sum. Students who choose not to participate in the voluntary excursion will be offered an alternative teaching plan.

This course is offered to incoming exchange students and will be taught in English if necessary.
