About this course
Content
Design and documentation of net Zero Emission Buildings with focus on integrated energy design, renewable energy and architectural quality. It includes building integration of heating, cooling and ventilation systems that meet comfort needs and building integration of renewable energy systems with emphasis on solar energy harvesting. Application of design and evaluation tools and integrated design methodology with focus on cooperation between architects and engineers to solve a building project.
This course will build on the course AAR4926 - Integrated Energy Design - Theory, focusing on building energy systems for energy generation and occupant comfort.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The course scope has a strong emphasis on the design of building energy systems while including interaction with engineering and architectural domains for net Zero Emission Buildings. The course objective is to provide applied experience in the following areas:
- Thermal comfort and indoor environment
- Ventilation systems
- Heating and cooling systems
- Energy generation systems
- Building performance simulation
- Interdependencies of building energy systems, structures and architecture.
Skills
The students will develop the following skills in relation to the concepts and strategies for sustainable building projects:
- Use design methods and simulation programs in relation to energy and indoor environment in buildings
- Discuss the benefits of selected approaches with design team members
- Present and explain the developed approaches in a group setting
- Respond to feedback from peers and tutors.
- Use relevant tools and methods for design and documentation of effective energy use and utilization of renewable energy in buildings.
General competence
To be able to lead and participate in interdisciplinary design projects that integrate energy efficiency with high architectural quality. The overall ambition is to support architects and engineers in overcoming the challenges encountered to achieve a 100% renewable energy zero-emission society.
Teaching methods
Design studio guidance and presentations; co-operation in groups; supplementary lectures where needed.
This course is offered to international master's students. Language of instruction is English.
