Urban Development

The course will focus on the design, development, production and management of our built environment, and on how the architect can be a leading agent in this from the early concept phase on. This covers organization and management issues, the building process, cost calculation and analysis, life cycle considerations, and the management of information through the entire process. Special emphasis will be given to research, analysis, strategy, programming and concept development and design. The main focus of the course will be on understanding our built environment as a (intelligent) dynamic in which the physical objects are means rather than ends. Therefore this course will emphasise communication, management, teamwork, and the use of ICT as tools for design as well as for analysis and communication. The subject gives knowledge in use of different ICT- tools in both design and management. Digital modelling and visualization will be central topics in combination with live presentation and communication.

The course will give a thorough introduction and knowledge about the architect's role and responsibilities in a larger development project with emphasis on the early stages of the project development. KNOWLEDGE: The student will have basic knowledge of the basic parameters related to urban project development and have knowledge about various methods and tools related to analysis, feasibility studies and project development with emphasis on the development of conceptual solutions up to early project phases. SKILLS: The course will further provide knowledge and experience with the use of various ICT tools for modeling, visualization and presentation. The student will be able to consider alternative solutions and develop projects based on understanding of location, context and market. GENERAL COMPETENCE: The student will be able to communicate and present a project in a clear manner. The course will provide an understanding of the various actors in the role of a development, with special emphasis on the architect's role. Lectures and workshops.

Optional excursions can be arranged as part of the teaching of the course. Students who participate in optional excursions must expect to pay a small share of the expenses. For students who do not participate in optional excursions, an alternative will be offered.
