City- and Planning Knowledge

The course will give knowledge in developing sustainable conceptual urban design proposals as well as urban planning strategies. Additionally it will give a general understanding in sustainability and ecology. Methods for various analysis of urban settings and landscapes are a part of the course. Space, form/ typologies and functions as well as representation techniques are of importance. Students will develop the ability to discuss social ethical issues and understand the mutual relations and implications between community and urban development. Contemporary urban development in the light of sustainability, present and future challenges and opportunities will be discussed.

Knowledge: The candidate has ... - basic knowledge of the Norwegian plan system, plant types and their content. - knowledge of the concepts of urban spaces, morphology, typologies and functions. - Basic knowledge of reference search, reference usage and copyright in academic texts and documentation, as well as knowledge of a selected urban development project. - Basic knowledge of plans and documents, city models and participation models. Skills: Candidates ... - Have an understanding of the planning processes, involved actors and influence opportunities. - Have an understanding of the planning tool's possibilities and limitations for urban development and architecture design. - Can read plans and retrieve and apply the information in the plans. - Can use applied knowledge in an appropriate and critical way, using knowledge, open up new understanding frameworks. General competence: Candidates ... - can communicate architectural and urban development related work at a professional and academic level in the form of contributions to printed publications and exhibitions as well as digital presentation. - takes independent responsibility for own learning and professional development. - can reflect critically on their own work and create new understanding frameworks. - have the ability to discuss social ethical issues and understand the mutual effects and addictions between societal development and urban development and planning work.
