Physical Planning and the Environments

The course is built up around an ongoing project in a specific urban area. The project relates to location and use of land, service and common functions, play and recreation, transport systems, traffic safety and universal design, water supply, drainage and pollution. Suggestions for improvements of the physical environment, evaluation of consequences and comparison of alternatives are done based on situation analyses. Part of the course is the use of digital maps, production of analyses and plan suggestions using Geographical Information Systems (GIS). In connection to this an introduction to surveying will be given. The lectures emphasize questions that are central to the project work, as well as providing insight into the planning of social tasks and planning processes.

Through working with the physical environment the students are to be introduced to essential elements in sustainable urban development and infrastructure. In addition they will obtain basic knowledge of project work in groups, report writing and presentation.

Project work in groups. The project uses ICT tools, and is to be presented as a written report in digital format. The course is held in cooperation between the Department of Urban Design and Planning, the Department of Civil and Transport Engineering, and the Department of Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering. Group-based project grade. However, a differentiated grade within the group is possible. The students must have passed the surveying course in order to be graded in the BM1 course. BM1 is coordinated with Technostart.
